Working on your personal development is a process that you will continue for the rest of your life. That is, if you’re willing to continually grow.

As a business owner or one who is considering starting a business, it is important to understand yourself. This is where a personal development plan comes into action.

Being a business owner is wonderful, but do you have what it takes to get it going and see it grow?

That’s a tough question to answer, because all of us want to say “Yes.”

I’ve worked with business owners for over thirty years and have seen what it takes to keep going when you feel like it’s just not worth the effort.

As a business owner, you need to look at yourself from the inside out. What are your skills, talents, desires, goals, and qualities?

Are you looking to build a business that gives you freedom or are you building a business that gives you a job?

Personally, I don’t want a job that I own, I want a business that gives me the personal satisfaction and freedom that empowers me daily.

Let’s look at the purpose of a personal development plan and why having one is important for you.

Take Inventory of Your Life

Your first step is to make a list.

Make four columns with the following headings:

  • Strengths
  • Weaknesses
  • Opportunities
  • Roadblocks

Now, fill in those four columns for yourself. Your goal is to make a detail list of each of these areas in your life.

Development Goals

Once you’ve made your list, you’ll analyze each one to see what you can to improve.

For your strengths, you will want to continue to build those strengths.

Your weaknesses may be areas that are permanent, or, areas that you can overcome. If they are permanent, then how can you maximize the strengths of others to help you.

Opportunities are those open doors that are just waiting for you to walk through. Are you willing to take that step of faith?

Roadblocks can be your limiting beliefs or actual roadblocks you feel keep you stuck where you are. Consider you mindset, is it a roadblock to your success? If so, take action to improve your mindset.

Your Available Resources

You’ve decided to become a business owner, yet you are stuck in how to get started.

Look at your resources. What skills do you have? What do you need in order to get your business started? What can you do yourself to make this dream a reality? Where do you need help? Are you willing to pursue outside help in the areas that you are lacking personal resources?

No matter what type of business you desire to build, marketing is your lifeline to success. As you look at your personal development plan, you may realize that one of your weaknesses is in the area of marketing.

I know it was on my personal list of weaknesses.

You can invest your time, money, heart, and soul into your business, but without a marketing plan, you’ve wasted your time.
